Meet the Community– The Canteen at Maker Heights

The Canteen at Maker Heights

The Canteen at Maker Heights is a family run business celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, owned and run by Nick Platts with his wife Alethea.

Nick trained at River Cottage and then was head chef at the Prince Hall in Dartmoor and started The Canteen based strongly on the values of using locally sourced produce.  The eclectic and ever-changing menu depends on both what the local fishermen bring up the hill and the extensive array of fresh produce from local farmers and suppliers, influenced by his love of every type of food from around the world.

The happy atmosphere is noted by everyone who comes up here and this is no small part due to Alethea who is the guiding force in keeping The Canteen running smoothly with happy customers, many of whom are regulars.

The Canteen also couldn’t function without Ben Somerville who has been the other head chef since a year after opening and his skills are a mainstay in the success of The Canteen.

The Canteen has been lucky to have some of the best local young people starting work, some launching their careers often beginning in pot wash and progressing through apprenticeships becoming talented chefs such as Connor.

Others going on to achieve good jobs and/or university places.  Developing a good work ethic in the kitchen is not always easy but the fact that so many of the staff stay and return is the confirmation which contributes to making it such a wonderful place to visit.

Here’s to the next ten years at The Canteen, a relaxing place to take in the wonderful views whilst experiencing outstanding food whether it’s a flat white with a sweet treat, a three-course celebration lunch with delicious wine or the famous Maker Breakfast.
