Music
at Maker

A musical home for the up and coming, from raves, randoms, festivals and energy rooms. Maker and music, it’s a history.

Music at Maker Heights

Since the late 1990’s Maker has been widely recognised for its vibrant grass-roots music culture.

Over the years it has hosted summer music festivals and been the site of much loved venues The Random Arms and Energy Rooms (both now closed). At Maker, young musicians have been nurtured through music workshops, reputations have been built and local talent developed, including artists and bands like Land of the Giants, Haunt the Woods, Hillside Heroes, Woodland Blue and Thomas Calladine.

For a deeper dive into the emergence of music culture here at Maker, see Music at Maker 1999 - 2018, in our Social Heritage section.

Today, our music culture is as strong as ever. Home to two venues, Patchwork Studios and Garrison Gallery, Maker continues this incredible legacy.

Patchwork hosts a youth music lab, a recording studio, and an incredible array of visiting bands and DJs.

In addition, Maker is home to several musicians who have studios in the Barrack Block, including John Tye of Ocean Moon, Richard James of The Retreat, Helen Kuumbi of Black Friday, Mike Osborne and Ross Edwards of Kill The Gun.

Patchwork Studios are a close–knit group of dedicated artists and musicians who deeply believe in the transformative potential of music and art.
