Over 60 short films, features, installations and expanded cinema performances from 18 countries, over three days.

Elevation celebrates emerging voices in artistic, experimental, and expanded cinema, offering a platform to Southwest film makers of any genre, and experimental film makers from across the globe in a brand new and exciting offering hosted at Patchwork Studios.

Elevation 2024 will show over 10 hours of film, curated by our in house team, spread across 3 days of ticketed programmes, as well as expanded cinema events and some free to enter installation/film events. Main screenings are hosted at Patchwork Studios, with an additional installation and performance space at Rame Projects.

The centre piece of this event is the film AUM. A collaboration between Carl Slater and Ocean Moon Group that features live footage originally filmed at Notch Studio Maker Heights along with images designed to free the mind and complement the rich audio tapestry.

Two films that follow feelings of isolation, conflict, and colonialism. Both have elements of visual or spoken poetry, showcased through stunning shots and truly moving imagery. Not quite documentaries, these films highlight the lives of those affected by massive change.

Each of the films in this section shares its distinctive relationship to Earth and the landscape it encapsulates. For some it is the bedrock for visual material, and others it has been used to physically manipulate the film itself.

“VHS Diaries is the tale of era of illegal home movies and the adventures of finding and accessing black market videos in post revolution Iran, during the Iran –Iraq war and the post war era when the ban on video was finally lifted while the foreign and art house films still remained illegal .It is the story of love of cinema in times of restriction, the communities of cinephiles, the influential characters and the prices paid on the way.”

“Shadowlands is an acknowledgment of the shape of shadows. This exhibition is a collection of photographs and artefacts taken on journeys of contemplation over a four year period: where ancient sites have become places of solace and respite, reimagined and curated to form a mythological shadowland.”

Seaing/Hereing is an ongoing project exploring sensory and emotional connections to the artists’ new home among the South West landscapes and seascapes, from a neurodivergent perspective of heightened and altered audio-visual experience.

Expanded cinema performance 

Bristol Experimental Expanded Film (BEEF) artists’ collective present expanded occurrences, experimental film, performance, and the throwing of light and sound for an intimate space. Anticipate self-scratched superimpositions, hula hoops, getting in the way,  green screen, new Brunswick swing, flickering edges, excavated projectors, eye noise, and super 8 mistakes. 

Later, join members for expanded music via loops and fx, field recordings, lost records, and drones.
